How to Block the Hazards of the Summer Sun and Still Have Fun?

By: Gehad Halawa

Summer months have the strongest UV rays; long unprotected exposure to the sun can damage skin cells and make them wrinkled, dry, and discolored which is the main cause of skin cancer.

Avoiding the sun is the best way to stay safe under the summer sun, but we need to enjoy summer outdoor activities, so remember these tips to protect your skin:

  • Clothing:  Wearing dark-colored, long sleeves and pants.
  • Sunglasses: Protecting your eyes from the sun UV rays that may cause damage to your eyes.
  • Hats: Wearing wide-brimmed hat covers and shades your face, neck, eyes, and ears this protects you from the damage of UV rays.
  • Seek a Shade: Shade reduces the heat and the UV rays damage.
  • Hydration: Drinking plenty of water and clear fluids to cool your body temperature down and prevent dehydration in the summer.
  • Sunscreen: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to the exposed areas including ears and hands, 30 minutes before going outside and reapply the sunscreen every two hours to provide protection against UVA and UVB rays.

Also, wherever feasible, choose the time when the sun is not strong. Stay safe and enjoy your summer by purchasing the sunscreen that is appropriate for your skin type.
